Cecil County 4-Hers excel in statewide competition

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Thirteen members of the Cecil County 4-H Horse Program traveled to the University of Maryland on March 10 to compete in the statewide 2018 Maryland 4-H Horse Bowl Competition.
The Junior team of Reed Mason (Rising Sun), Katherine Mentrak (Port Deposit), Nathaniel Smith (Rising Sun), and Jenna Clark (Port Deposit) placed first.
This is the second year in a row that the Cecil County Junior Horse Bowl team was the state champion.
All members of the team placed in the top ten individually.
Mentrak placed ninth, Smith placed eighth, Mason placed seventh, and Clark placed fourth.
The Intermediate team of Holly Adams (North East), Angela Edelson (Landenberg, Pa.), Vivian Miller (Perryville), Natalie Holdren (Middletown, Del.),
Coaches Mary Crabbe and Maureen Edelson placed third in the state, among 18 other teams.
Allena Crabbe (Rising Sun) was put on a Scramble team of miscellaneous intermediates throughout the state.
Her team placed fourth in the state competition.
Individually, Crabbe placed seventh and Miller placed third in a field of 76 contestants.
The senior team of Gavra Goldie (Lincoln University, Pa), Hannah Kirk (Rising Sun), Brynn Lasala (North East), and Sadie Kalman (Lewisville, Pa.) placed second in the competition.
They are all first-year seniors that worked very hard to succeed against older participants.
Kirk placed fifth individually and Goldie placed fourth.
Kirk and Goldie have qualified to compete to be on the team that represents the state of Maryland at the National 4H Horse Bowl Competition and the All American Quarter Horse Congress Horse Bowl Competition.
The Maryland 4H Horse Bowl Competition is an annual event for 4H members throughout the state.
It is just one of the many activities that the members of the Cecil County 4H Horse Program participate in throughout the year.
