Jefferson Co. Farmers’ Market set to swap sites
LAKE HOPATCONG — Farmers’ markets routinely make changes from year to year.
The Foodshed Alliance’s Blairstown market cut its weekly hours. Other markets have changed days or added or removed music.
For 2019, the Jefferson Farmers’ market is changing locations.
The sprawling township at the northwest edge of Morris County has long been divided into two sections. The physical divide is Mahlon Dickerson Reservation, a large county park. The demographic divide was long the fact that the Lake Hopatcong side of the township was a summer resort area and the Milton side to the north was primarily farms.
Development in the form of bungalow conversions on the lake end and new residential construction on Milton’s farmland changed that. The construction of a high school in the 1960s and a middle school in the ‘70s brought the young people together.
In spite of this, Tom Galfo has discovered differences: “The lake side seems more supportive than Milton,” he said. He is moving the market to Fireman’s Field at Route 15 South and Bowling Green Parkway.
Galfo said the new location “has more room for vendors and better traffic flow.” He said parking will be outside the Lakeside Recreation Complex across Swan Lane from the new location. After examining sports schedules, he said there should not be much overlap. The market will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Sunday and Sunday games don’t generally start until 1 p.m.
The market returns for the season on June 2 and runs through October. The vendors who have been with the market for the past two years are returning and Galfo said more vendors have called looking for space, which he will now have at the new location.
Galfo, who served on the Morris County Agricultural Development Board, said the Route 15 corridor will send more traffic to the market.
He said the new administration in the township got behind the move. Jefferson has a new mayor for the first time in 20 years.
Galfo’s own farm, The Feisty Pepper, is a regular at the farmers’ market as are Sparta Mountain Farm, Corbett’s Cooke Bar Kitchen, Jersey Pickles, Olsen’s Honey and Spice and Escentually Natural.
New for 2019 are Jersey Girl Cheese and Mojo Homemade Dog Treats. Galfo would like another meat vendor and a fish vendor to join the market.
