FSA dedicated to preserving land (Keeping the Farm)
America is losing three acres of farmland every minute — 31 million acres lost between 1992 and 2012 as reported by the American Farmland Trust. As urban areas expand, they leave parcels of land too small for conventional farmers to work.
For the person with production and marketing skills, this creates an opportunity.
Small, fractionated tracts are perfect for community supported agriculture niche and local farms directly serving urban customers.
Fresh, locally grown products command a higher price, and this has helped fuel the growth we have seen in this segment of agriculture.
Farm Service Agency offers programs to serve these producers. Our Non-insured Crop Disaster
Assistance Program can insure against disaster related production losses and our Microloan program has products that can assist with production, equipment or real estate acquisition.
We also have targeted assistance to beginning and historically underserved farmers within these programs. I encourage you to get more information from our website (www.usda.fsa.gov) or visit a local office.
