HARRINGTON, Del. — In conversation during January’s Delaware Agriculture Week, Harrington farmer Bob Garey, Sr. shared with the sisters of King Crop Insurance that he wanted to get a yard sign to mark his family’s recognition as a Delaware Farm Bureau Farm Family of Year.
Garey, a former Kent County Farm Bureau president and longtime chairman of the Delaware Agricultural Lands Preservation Foundation Board of Trustees, was awarded Farm Family of the Year in 1999, one year prior to the group included yard signs in the presentation.
Unbeknownst to Garey, King Crop Insurance worked with Delaware Farm Bureau to have a sign made like those currently presented to families.
“Bob is a legend in the farming community and we feel privileged to work with him and his sons Alan and Rob Garey,” said Donna King.
Initial plans were to surprise Garey with the sign in April at his 80th birthday party, but as with so much else, the coronavirus pandemic forced there to be different plans.
So on June 18, Nancy and Donna King presented the sign to Garey and his wife, Linda.
“He is so excited to get the sign up in his yard,” Donna said. “While we were there he showed us exactly where it would hang.”
