Heaven Hill Farm boasts N.J.’s largest fall festival
VERNON — As Route 94 meanders from the ski areas of Mountain Creek to the New York State border the fall foliage is interrupted by a large bustling farm and retail operation.
Heaven Hill Farm boasts the largest fall festival in New Jersey.
The 372-acre farm once sported beef cattle but by 1982, the Theobald family had made the transition to produce and set up a farm stand.
Gradually, Martin Theobald build greenhouses and added retail space for a garden center and bakery.
Now the Great Pumpkin Festival draws people from far beyond the Sussex County, N.J., and Orange County, N.Y., neighborhood through the first weekend in November.
Theobald brings in carnival rides as well as the traditional corn maze, hayrides and pumpkin picking.
The child-centered activities include pig races, a spider web crawl, Lincoln Log building, panning for gold, hay bales for climing, Maggie the Milking Cow and monster sling shots.
Theobald doesn’t charge for parking.
Admission prices are $15 on weekends and $10 during the week.
His staff expands greatly during the fest, providing jobs for local teens and retirees.
