MACCA reps award $5,000 in scholarships

QUEENSTOWN, Md. — The Mid-Atlantic Certified Crop Advisers have awarded two $2,500 college scholarships to local students to further education in the plant and soil science fields.
The scholarship committee selected Jamie Conner of Schuyler, Va., and Ryan Wheatley of Clayton, Del., as recipients of the 2018 scholarship.
These students will be honored during lunch of Crop Management School in Ocean City, Md., on Nov. 14.
“Given the declining number of students enrolled in agronomy related programs in our region, the Mid-Atlantic Certified Crop Advisers believe it is important to encourage students to consider careers in agronomy by supporting their education needs through the use of scholarships,” said MACCA Chair Bruce Bagley.
Conner became involved in her local FFA in seventh grade through which she participated in various agronomy and crop judging competitions.
When it came time for her to choose a college major,
Crop and soil science was a natural fit as a study focus because she enjoys it so much.
In her freshman year at Virginia Tech University, she decided to put a twist on it, adding minors in international studies and global food security and health so that she could focus on international agriculture.
After graduation, Conner said her goal is to assist undeveloped nations to help them establish sustainable agriculture tactics.
Born and raised on his family’s dairy, grain, and poultry farm, Wheatley’s passion for agriculture runs deep. After serving as the Smyrna High School FFA Chapter President and receiving the 2018 Delaware State Star Farmer award, Wheatley is entering his freshman year at Virginia Tech, where he plans on double majoring in Dairy Science and Wildlife Management.
Using the educational experiences afforded to him, he hopes to transition into a career in agriculture upon his graduation and use his knowledge to help improve operations on his family farm.
The MACCA board approved additional funding for another year of college scholarships at their recent meeting in October.
Applications will be available early summer of 2019.
