New Jersey’s Santinis, Truszkowskis represent with strong national showings
Corn growers from the Mid-Atlantic Region were well-represented in the 2021 National Corn Growers Association’s corn yield contest results, released on Dec. 15.
In the contest’s six categories the region was eligible for, eight out of the top 18 national placings, were from growers in Virginia, Maryland and New Jersey.
Three of the categories are awarded separate placings; one set for Corn Belt states and one set for all other states.
David Hula of Charles City, Va., topped the 600 bushel-per-acre mark again this year in NCGA’s National Corn Yield Contest.
Hula produced the highest yield in the contest with 602.1694 bushels per acre.
His son Craig Hula produced the contest’s second highest yield at 583.0674 bushels per acre.
Both Hula entries were a Pioneer hybrid, P1222YHR, entered in the No-Till Irrigated category.
Heath Cutrell of Chesapeake, Va., took first place in the Conventional Non-Irrigated category, with an entry of DeKalb’s DKC66-18 at 391.3092 bushels per acre.
Mid-Atlantic growers swept the No-Till Non-Irrigated category for non-Corn Belt states. Leonard Truszkowski of Stewartsville, N.J., led the category with an entry of 353.3610 bushels per acre growing Dyna-Gro’s D54VC14RIB.
Sharon Santini was second at 352.3746 with DeKalb’s DKC63-90RIB and William Rigdon of Jarrettsville, Md., placed third with 324.2236 growing DeKalb’s DKC65-95 RIB.
In the Strip, Min., Mulch, Ridge-Till Non-Irrigated category, Harrison Rigdon of Jarrettsville, Md., placed first growing DeKalb’s DKC59-82 RIB for an entry yield of 366.8270 bushels per acre.
Scott Truszkowski of Stewartsville, N.J., was second with a yield entry of 341.8442 bushels per acre growing Dyna-Gro’s D55VC80RIB.
Contest entries are taken from a small portion of a farmer’s field and do not represent field averages.
The 27 national winners had verified yield entries averaging more than 376 bushels per acre, compared to the projected national average of 177 bushels per acre nationwide.
“This contest offers farmers a chance to come together both for good-natured competition and to help innovate the future of our industry,” said Lowell Neitzel, chair of NCGA’s Member and Consumer Engagement Action Team. “These contestants grow to be leaders in many other ways as well. For many, the contest may be their first interaction with NCGA.
“As they learn more, the true value of the work that we do to build a better tomorrow inspires greater achievement.
“Whether getting involved in advocacy, leadership or sustainability efforts, the contest breeds champions for corn farmers in many arenas.”
Winners receive national recognition in publications such as the NCYC Corn Yield Guide, as well as trips or other awards from participating sponsoring seed, chemical and crop protection companies.
Winners will be honored in March of 2022 during Commodity Classic in New Orleans.
