Photo from ag exhibit now cherished family heirloom
COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Obviously it was standing room only.
The photo of a University of Maryland commencement, believed to have been taken about 1980, comes from the files of a former long-time University of Maryland Extension turf specialist Dr. Elwyn Deal.
Dr. Deal, a member of the University of Maryland Extension faculty from 1964 to 1986, recalled that the photo was used in a College of Agriculture exhibit and “when the exhibit was dismantled and the photo about to be trashed, I grabbed it.”
Dr. Deal kept it around home for a lot of years then offered it to his kids.
All three of his daughters graduated in Cole Field House.
They attended High Point High School in Beltsville, Md., and many of the schools in the area used Cole for graduation ceremonies.
“All of us attended untold number of basketball games and other events there, too, over the years,” Dr. Deal said.
He got the photo back this past Christmas, made a digital copy of it so it could be stored as a keepsake in the computer rather than in the closet.
“I had to scan it in two parts then ‘stitch’ them together,” he recalled.
Dr. Deal said he did not have any information on who made the original photo or when it was made. “As far as I know, the photo itself was a ‘stock’ photo from a file that our Information and Publications Department -— Jack Owens, Milt Nelson, Sandy Farwell — had access to. They are the ones who assembled the materials and prepared the exhibit. There were several other similar photos of the university but this was the only one that I kept.”
While at Maryland, Dr. Deal also served as associate dean for Extension and later associate provost for Extension in the Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
He joined the Clemson University Extension faculty in 1986 and retired in 1998.
He lives in Anderson, S.C.
